To date, blood glucose meters have undergone five stages of technological development. The first three generations primarily used the light reflection method to measure blood glucose concentration, while the fourth and fifth generations mainly relied on the electrochemical method. Currently, the mainstream blood glucose meters in China use the electrochemical method. Compared to the fourth generation, the fifth generation has made some improvements in details such as micro-blood sampling and multi-site blood sampling.
Currently, there is a tendency for blood glucose meters on the market to be homogenized, with little difference in basic functions. However, how to achieve more precise measurements and make it more convenient for patients to use has always been a common goal pursued by all companies. Mobile internet, continuous glucose monitoring, and non-invasive blood glucose monitoring are the three main directions of current blood glucose meter development. Mobile blood glucose meters fully utilize mobile internet technology, combining with mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to provide real-time analysis results and store them in the cloud, facilitating monitoring by doctors and individuals. Mobile blood glucose meters connect to smartphones via the headphone jack, and test results are stored and processed through mobile software, offering functions such as saving, automatic analysis, sharing, and reminders.
